Ambitious plans to improve Keigh-ley town centre and the bus station will go on public display next week.

Bradford council will reveal details of a proposed new bus station and £400,000 of traffic measures.

Local people will have a chance to give their opinions on the plans, which aim to benefit pedestrians, bus services and through-traffic.

Highways officers will be on hand to answer questions when the plans are exhibited in the Airedale shopping centre from Wednesday to Saturday. Detailed plans can also be seen in Keighley library and the town hall Information Centre from Monday to September 20. Free colour leaflets outlining the measures will be accompanied by questionnaires that can be returned to the council by freepost. Ian Gallacher, one of the council's senior engineers, says blow-ups of each individual traffic measure will be on show.

Proposed work includes new traffic lights and crossings on North Street, changes to bus station access and widening of congested East Parade. There would be a pedestrian crossing near Toymaster on Cavendish Street, and improved exits at Spring Gardens Lane and Mornington Street.

Mr Gallacher and fellow officers want to take account of public reaction before finalising the details of each traffic measure.

The council hopes to carry out the improvements over the next two financial years up to April 2001.

The bus station and road improvements can be carried out separately, and some of the road measures could be carried out independently if money cannot be found for everything. Extra funding for some measures could be available from West Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive and Keighley's Single Regeneration Budget.
