THORNENSIANS 7

YARNBURY 25

YARNBURY started their league campaign with a difficult away trip but came away with a satisfactory win from a workmanlike display.

The match was two minutes old when Steve Lee opted to run a kickable penalty. Whitehurst chipped to the corner and John Bramham raced to touchdown.

Thornensians then applied pressure and Yarnbury had to defend their line for long periods. The line was not crossed due to the line-out ball won by Rigby and Burton and the tenacity of Paul Marshall.

Bramham passed to fellow winger Paul McNulty who raced away to score making it 10-0 at half-time. With the elements in Yarnbury's favour skipper Lee kicked a simple penalty.

A speculative kick ahead saw the home side collect the ball to score a converted try.

Phil Deacon, who had replaced the injured Thompson, chipped to the corner and Bramham touched down for Lee to convert.

Sustained pressure saw the ball moved wide once more and Deacon was on hand to score in the corner.

Overall coach Bob Hood was reasonably satisfied to gain victory away from home. However, there is still a lot of room for improvement.

West Park 7

Hornets 20

After their exceptional start to the season Yarnbury Hornets were in for a stiff test of character against local rivals West Park Bramhope.

Park are four leagues above them but they could not take the sting out of the Hornets tail.

Park did take a 7-0 lead with a converted try but Yarnbury hit back and Lilley converted a penalty which was followed by an excellent try from Steve Mather.

Skipper Craven gave his usual rousing half-time talk and the Hornets came out firing on all cylinders. Mather showed the pace which will surely see him head the try scorers list this season as he crossed for his tenth try of the season.

He added another which Lilley converted to seal victory.

Yarnbury Fourths 42

Roundhegians 7

Yarnbury fourths gained their third and most impressive victory of the season against an experienced side which presented more problems than the score suggests.

The Yarnbury pack dominated and gave good ball to half-backs Fred Harrison and Kevin Robinson allowing them to control the game.

Robinson scored a try and then Phil Wray went over after a wonderful break by Ben Horner. Hegians hit back with a converted try to make it 10-7 at half-time.

Using the wind in the second-half Yarnbury completely dominated and tries came from Nigel Weatherhead, Ian Clemence, Dave Langley and Ben Horner - the latter completing a marvellous debut by crossing twice. Fred Harrison converted two and Robinson added a drop goal.
