The management team at Club 101 must have known that their Christmas promotion campaign would have caused deep offence to a great number of people.

If it was designed to attract publicity, it has done just that.

One option would have been for it to be ignored. However, it is far too offensive for that stance to have been taken. You cannot accept hurtful toilet wall 'humour' being allowed to be on public display.

The attempts of the club manager to justify and defend the message on the posters are shallow and do nothing to appease the feelings of Christian people and other religious groups throughout the district who will be sharing the feeling of hurt and disgust.

All that said, there is a question which could be and should be asked. Will the action of Mr Pritchard cause people to look in the mirror and be frank with themselves?

For there is a level of honesty in the statement on the Club 101 poster, that Christmas for many is an excuse for a bout of bingeing.

A vast amount of the nation's financial success is going to be dictated by how much money goes across the tills in the next few weeks. The profits of massive organisations will stand or fall on this measure.

Year after year attempts are made to bring more and more shoppers into Keighley to empty their purses and wallets instead of going elsewhere. The media plays its role in this scenario too.

By accepting that Christmas means business, you also have to agree with some of the logic behind Club 101's campaign. They are simply trying to get their share of the spending spree, and no doubt they will.

The situation will get worse as the year 2000 draws closer. It is not a case of being boring spoilsports and party poopers.

It is a matter of showing respect.
