Lancs FA 1, West Riding FA 2

West Riding dumped Lancashire Under-18's out of the Northern Counties Youth Cup in a superb 'Roses' clash.

The Yorkshire outfit, captained by Jonathan Lonsdale of Cross Hills backed up by Andrew Holden of Silsden FC, pulled off a rare victory over the 'Old Enemy.'

Holden and his mif-field partner Richard Marchant of Garforth Town controlled the game for the first 20 minutes, but Lancashire began to come more into the game and took the lead in the 30th minute through Michael Mason.

West Riding struggled to find their way back into the game and were lucky not the concede a second just on half time.

They came out after thebreak in determined mood and gained the equaliser when full back Scott price (Eccleshill United) swung a corner to the far post where centre-half Sean Hazleden headed the ball through a ruck of players low into the net.

Stricker Ian Heppenstall cracked a blazing effort just over the crossbar and striker Billy Kendall (Golcar United) saw another shot saved.

West Riding's winner came in the 69th minue when central defender Mike Speight (Selby Town) cleared down the centre of the field and Heppenstall headed the ball over the advancing keeper.

Solid defending saw them hold out for a victory which put Lancashire out of contention, but the West Riding side have still to meet Cheshire, Liverpool and Cumberland in Group 1 if they are to retain the title they won last season.

n Tomorrow (Saturday) the West Riding team take on a strong Durham side, at Durham City, in the 4th round of the FA Youth Cup. If they win the West Riding team are through to the semi-final of the national competition.
