A Bradford mother has said she can finally lay her daughter to rest after her killer was sent down for life for the murder of another Bradford prostitute.

Margaret Midgley's 22-year-old daughter Deborah Kershaw died at the hands of George Naylor who was yesterday given a life sentence for murdering teenage prostitute Maureen Stepan.

Mrs Midgley said she hoped the double killer would never go free.

"My only hope now is that this monster will spend the rest of his life in prison," said Mrs Midgley, who lives in Queensbury.

"I hope he rots in there for what he's done.

"It was 13 years ago that Deborah died but it feels like yesterday. It's only now I feel I can finally put her to rest knowing that he will never get out.

"Our family, including my other son and daughter, have been devastated by what has happened.

"We can try to get on with our lives knowing that he's not going to be able to do this again.

"I was completely disgusted when he was allowed a retrial in the first place. If he had been free to walk the streets I don't know what I would have done."

Deborah Kershaw, who was working as a prostitute, was killed by George Naylor in the red light district of Bradford in 1985.

He admitted her manslaughter and was given a life sentence which was later cut to 11 years after an appeal.

Naylor had been out of prison only eight weeks when he killed Deborah Kershaw after serving ten years for the rape and assault of a pensioner.

Yesterday the judge at Sheffield Crown Court recommended that he serve a minimum of 20 years for the murder of Maureen Stepan in June 1995.

"I believe he should never have been allowed out of prison after the attack on the old lady," said Mrs Midgley.

"Then two young girls would be alive today. Whatever their lives were like, they didn't deserve to die like that."
