Parish councillors in Pool-in-Wharfedale are furious that a year-long road-safety investigation has been thrown out by City Council bosses.

The results of months of consultation carried out by the parish council and Leeds highways officers will not even reach committee stage - because there is no money to pay for its findings.

A 22-point 'wish list' containing a series of improvements for the village was handed to the Council in September 1998.

And after waiting for it to reach the Leeds highways west sub-committee for almost five months, parish councillors were not even told when it was dropped from January's agenda.

Now the city council says it has no plans to put the 'wish list' on any future agendas.

A spokesman said: "While we are aware that the parish council has great aspirations for traffic-calming measures in the village, the schemes suggested would prove very expensive. It would be premature to take a report to the highways sub-committee for members' approval."

Pool Parish Council chairman Chris Leggatt said crying poverty was a pathetic excuse. "But the fact they are not prepared to put it before a committee so politicians can prioritise things is dreadful," he said.
