A parish councillor has vowed to carry on representing the community despite being caught drink-driving.

But he will need to convince Ilkley Labour Party members at a meeting later this month that he is still fit to be a candidate in the May elections.

Labour Councillor Roy Fox failed a breath test after being stopped while driving his Ford Fiesta on Valley Drive, Ilkley.

At Bingley Court, Coun Fox, 46, of Wyvil Crescent, Ben Rhydding, pleaded guilty to driving with excess alcohol. He was fined £200 with £50 costs and banned for 14 months.

Following his court appearance, Coun Fox said he would not be resigning from the parish council.

"I have taken advice and intend to carry on as before," said Coun Fox.

But he would not be attending any more of the Keighley and Ilkley Crime Prevention Panel meetings.

Asked if he thought conviction should be a matter for stepping down from the parish council, Coun Fox replied: "I don't see why it should be. It does not affect what I have done in the past ten years."

But Ilkley Labour Party spokesman Geoff Best said that Coun Fox would have to explain his actions at a meeting on February 16.
