Boxing: Bradford's British lightweight champion Bobby 'The Viper' Vanzie will make his first defence of his title against Anthony Campbell in Birmingham in April.

And Vanzie, who has set himself the target of making two successful defences of his crown in order to claim a Lonsdale belt outright, is full of confidence about the bout, having already comprehensively beaten the Londoner five years ago.

Vanzie lived up to his nickname in claiming the British title when he stopped previous champion Wayne Rigby in stunning fashion on the Mancunian's home turf last October.

He will meet Campbell - subject to British Boxing Board of Control approval - on April 1 at the Aston Villa Leisure Centre.

Despite the one-sided nature of their previous encounter, it promises to be a tough contest for the Yorkshireman.

Campbell, who is coming down from welterweight to have a crack at the title, is a hardened professional with a reputation for being difficult to put on the canvas.

He has 14 wins and four draws among his 32 pro fights and his last contest saw him stop highly fancied South African Philip Ndou.

And his most recent defeats - against youngster Richard Hatton and Spaniard Manuel Berdonce in Madrid last year - were at the hands of top opponents.

The 32-year old from Shepherd's Bush lost every round when he met Vanzie in a six round contest in Oldham in 1994, but Vanzie intends to accord him every respect.

"He's a strong with plenty of knockouts to his name," said Vanzie. "He carries a punch but I've already beaten him with plenty to spare, so I have to be confident.

"He was very defensive with me but I expect him to be a lot more adventurous in Birmingham."

Sky Sports and Eurosport have already expressed an interest in the contest, with a view to a delayed broadcast.
