The grieving mum of an 11-year-old boy killed when his bike collided with a bus has paid tribute to her loving son.

Deborah Barnes said it was the first time her son, Michael Bucktrout, had strayed away from the close where they lived when the tragedy happened on Monday night.

Michael was cycling with a friend when he collided with a single-decker bus in Towngate, Wyke.

Mrs Barnes said: "We're absolutely devastated.

"Michael was such a home boy and never strayed from the close when he was on his bike.

"This was the first time he went further afield. He knew he wasn't allowed further out."

She added that Michael would always wear an overcoat with yellow reflectors on it while out cycling.

"He was a very sensible lad and he was always careful when he was out and about. It's a tragic accident." It is the second trauma suffered by Michael's family in recent months.

His older brother, Carl, 14, a pupil at Wyke Manor Upper, received serious head injuries when he was involved in a motorbike accident while riding in woods near his home last summer.

Michael's other brother, Dean, is a paraplegic and suffers cerebral palsy and hydrocephalus.

Mrs Barnes added that Michael, a pupil at Wyke Middle, would be badly missed by his friends and family.

"He never cost me a moment's trouble. He was a very thoughtful and loving little boy," she said.

"He liked cycling, fishing and any sport in general and was a very popular lad.

"This whole thing's been a complete shock and everybody will miss him so much.

"He's gone to a place where no one will be able to hurt him now."

Pupils at Wyke Middle are now discussing a memorial for Michael.

An inquest will open on Friday morning.
