Scores of people are being asked to help police mount a huge search for missing Guiseley man Jonathan Danskin.

Family, friends and locals will join the police in scouring the countryside this weekend.

Police are baffled by the disappearance of the 28-year-old, nicknamed 'Jono', who was last seen on Sunday running into the River Wharfe at Otley after his car was stopped by police.

Insp Nigel Hirst said today that a search party of police, family, friends and locals would comb the countryside this weekend if he failed to turn up.

He added: "We are genuinely and seriously very concerned for his welfare.

"His family are distraught and from talking to them I don't believe he's the sort who'd deliberately put them through this unless he's had a bang on the head and is living rough somewhere."

Officers saw the self-employed joiner standing in the water by the weir but then lost sight of him.

Divers have been scouring the river between Otley and Pool with officers searching the countryside and making other inquiries since Sunday.

Inspector Gary Parker, of Weetwood police, said they were still considering three possibilities: "One is he got out but believes he's being sought and is keeping a low profile.

"The second is that he got into difficulties in the river and was swept away.

"The third is that he got out but may have fallen and injured himself on dry land.

"We're hoping it's the first situation but as much as we'd like to be able to pursue things in one clear direction we can't and are having to work on all three scenarios.''

He appealed for people to remain vigilant in case Mr Danskin slipped and injured himself while trying to make his way home cross country.

He said: "If he is lying low our only interest is finding him safe and well - he has nothing to fear from coming forward.''

Commenting on the search, which has included police divers, dog handlers, mounted officers and the force helicopter, Inspector Parker said: "Obviously all these things do cost a bit but you don't count pennies with something like this and we put in the resources we think are appropriate. Until we find something things will have to be reviewed on a daily basis.''
