A well known former employee of the Yorkshire Electricity Board (YEB) in Keighley has died aged 84.

William Narey died in Aire-dale Hospital last Saturday.

Mr Narey, who was born and raised in Bingley, held the post of Senior Administrator with the YEB. His daughter Elizabeth says: "He knew a lot of people and had a lot of connections in both Keighley and Bingley. As a member of the YEB's ex-colleagues' association he used to travel from Bingley to Keighley to keep in touch with old workmates."

Joining after the end World War Two, he continued to work for YEB until his retirement in July 1978.

During the war he was recruited into the Border Regiment at Carlisle and was later transferred to the R.A.S.C. After sailing to Singapore on the Empress of Canada he was taken prisoner by the Japanese army. He was released in 1945.

Alongside wife Margaret, he was an active member of Bingley Bowling Club and devoted much of his spare time to Bingley Rugby Union Club, where he held the position of secretary and treasurer.

Bill was also a supporter of the labour party and CND.

He had many friends at Bingley Music Union and sang with the choir at the Royal Albert Hall in 1997 to raise money for Yorkshire Cancer Research.

A memorial service was held yesterday at Nab Wood Crema-torium and a song recorded by Bingley Music Union at the Albert Hall was played.
