Simon Bell's record-breaking 63 round Northcliffe last month has had an added bonus.

The 15-year-old flies out to the United States on Sunday to take part in the Daily Telegraph junior golfer of the year competition.

After a chance to get acclimatised on Monday, he will be competing against 11 other top youngsters for the main prize over two rounds of the impressive South Georgia course in Florida.

"I am really looking forward to it. It will be quite a new experience for me," said Simon.

He was one of the leading qualifiers for the event after his eight- under-par round at his home course.

Earlier this year he was part of the Northcliffe junior team who won the Saab national junior team title in La Manga, and his impressive performances this year for the Scratch League team and Yorkshire Boys earned him a call to the Bradford senior team.

Less than a fortnight ago he played alongside his father, former T&A golfer of the year Martin Bell, in the Bradford team against Teesside at Eaglescliffe - the first time a father and son had played for the Union team.

But there is one drawback for Bell. His trip to the States will cost him a chance of being involved in the Yorkshire Inter-District team championships at Bingley St Ives next weekend.

He needed another appearance for the Bradford team to be eligible for the event, but misses the last fixture of the season against Harrogate at Knaresborough on Sunday.

Team captain Tim Wade has still to finalise his line-up for the fixture as he attempts to end the season with three straight wins to confirm third place in the table behind Sheffield and East Riding.
