Michael Vaughan and nightwatchman Ian Fisher rapidly shaped an unbroken half-century stand for Yorkshire when they resumed their first innings on ten for one at North Marine Road today.

The batsman already out was the luckless Matthew Wood who lost his off-stump to Dean Headley in the five overs which were possible at the start of the innings last night.

Kent, who made 302, were handicapped today by the absence of opening bowler Julian Thompson who had returned home because his wife was expecting the premature arrival of their first child.

Mark Ealham partnered Headley and there were four leg byes in Ealham's first over to Vaughan who then dashed a single to get off the mark.

Vaughan whipped Headley off his hips to the square leg boundary and Fisher showed he was no novice with the bat by cutting Headley for another four.

It was a promising opening by the second wicket pair and further boundaries followed as Fisher off-drove Ealham sweetly to the fence and Vaughan cover drove Headley with splendid timing, the ball racing into the deckchairs outside the festival marquee.

Chris Silverwood yesterday gave England good reason to regret excluding him from the tour of South Africa by capturing five for 67 and taking his tally of championship dismissals this season to 47.

Yorkshire were well on top with Kent struggling at 214 for eight but they then lost the initiative as Martin McCague and Min Patel added 68 for the ninth wicket with McCague playing some glorious cover drives while compiling a half century which came off 75 balls and contained ten boundaries.

Silverwood's only blemish during the day came when he put down a hard drive at mid-off when Patel was 18, the batsman going on to make 49 before Silverwood had him caught behind to end the innings.

Put in to bat, Kent were soon in trouble as Silverwood sent back openers Ed Smith and Robert Key and Ryan Sidebottom was rewarded for his persistence by dismissing David Fulton and Matthew Walker with consecutive deliveries.

A direct hit on the stumps by Gary Fellows ended Alan Wells' developing innings but Kent were rescued from 96 for five by acting captain Ealham and Steve Marsh who put on 86 in 21 overs.
