A speeding motorist who crashed into a Bradford cyclist, killing him outright, has been jailed for 18 months.

Bradford Crown Court heard how 47-year-old David Isles, from Bradford, was thrown 20ft into the air after being struck by a Vauxhall Corsa on the A59 near Skipton in May last year.

The car driver, Jonathan Melia, 31, of Earl Street, Colne, Lancashire, pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving. He was also banned from driving for five years.

Andrew Dallas, prosecuting, said Melia overtook a line of moving traffic near the junction with Heslaker Lane, on the outskirts of Broughton.

Other motorists had stated that the Corsa was travelling in excess of 60 mph as it passed them and entered a hatched area of road used by vehicles wishing to make a right turn into the side road. He struck more or less head-on a cyclist who was either stationary or approaching the protected area,'' said Mr Dallas.

The Corsa then veered to the offside, forcing an oncoming car to swerve and an articulated lorry to brake and stop. Melia eventually came to a halt in a farm entrance and was found to be in a dazed state.

He told police he had been driving home from work on the day of the crash and had been feeling "nauseous and a bit dizzy''.

Having spotted a farm entrance he planned to pull in there and stop, but a van in front of him suddenly turned out and he swerved out of the way. He then blacked out, and the next thing he remembered was being on a stretcher.

He told the police he knew nothing about a cyclist but accepted he had hit him, said Mr Dallas.

Andrew Stubbs, mitigating, said Melia had suffered blackouts from an early age but had never been told it was unsafe for him to drive. He had been "deeply traumatised'' by the incident .
