Keighley police are to tackle "inconsiderate and lazy parking" outside schools.

In a joint venture with Keighley Area Panel, they will install signs with a poignant message outside schools in the division.

The signs, which feature a child being involved in a road accident, are to warn drivers of the dangers of parking too close to school entrances.

Sergeant Richard Czornowol, head of Keighley police road traffic unit, says: "People who park across the entrances of schools often do so thinking of the safety of their own children, but they are not taking into account the safety of other pupils at the school."

He points out that accidents can occur when children cross the road from behind parked vehicles, without being seen by oncoming traffic.

"It is selfish, especially when people could easily park a short distance away and walk to the school gates," says Sgt Czornowol.

Areas adjacent to school entrances are already restricted by zig zag markings, and anyone parking on them could face a £20 fine or court action.

Use of the signs on some sites has already made a difference.

Sgt Czornowol says: "Drivers have realised that such inconsiderate and lazy parking could have serious consequences, and the situation has improved considerably."

This compelled Sgt Czornowol to approach Keighley Area Panel to finance the new signs. Money has now been provided for two new signs, installed this week.

Superintendent Derek Bonnard is grateful to KAP for their support.

He says: "Through partnership we can get the message across to motorists that parking across school gates could cost a child's life."
