Leigh RMI ... 0

Guiseley ..... 1

"YOU can watch Match of the Day from now until the end of the season and you won't see a better goal", claimed Guiseley manager Bobby Davison.

He was eulogising about Simon Ireland's ninth minute strike that ensured Guiseley collected four points out of six from two tough Bank Holiday away days.

After being disappointed with just a point in Cumbria, Davison brought his makeshift side to table-toppers Leigh and pocketed all three points, thanks to Ireland's 'Goal of the Season'.

He latched on to former Wales goalkeeper Dave Felgate's punch and his overhead kick from just outside the box left the embarrassed, quickly-retreating goalkeeper stranded.

From then on there was only going to be one winner as Guiseley protected Jim Shutt, so much so, that the young 'keeper hardly had a save to make in the remaining 80 minutes.

The injury crisis is such that striker Simon Parke shored up a defence that snuffed out all that high-flying Leigh could throw at them.

"You have to give credit to all the boys in that dressing room," Davison said immediately after the game.

"They worked hard to stop Leigh playing and we ran out worthy winners.

"You have to earn the right to play and we denied them that right.

"Half of my players were carrying knocks and to come away with the victory is a magnificent achievement," he added.

RMI were restricted to two real chances.

Steve Jones firing wide after cutting in from the left and Tony Black doing the same with a header.

Craig Bower had a chance to increase the lead midway through the second half after being released by Lee Poole and then Poole himself had a piledriver tipped over by Felgate.

Guiseley had a late scare when debutant Lee Pryer lashed in a 30-yard volley in injury time that shaved Shutt's bar.

Barrow AFC..................1

Guiseley AFC................1

GUISELEY travelled to newly promoted Barrow and could only manage a draw.

The home side, which included seven players making their debuts and a total of nine making their first appearances in the UniBond League, had the majority of possession in the opening hour.

In front of an excellent crowd of 1,700 Barrow pressurised their visitors and they should have scored on 17 minutes when a Doherty corner found Nicky Peverell on thefar post.

Unfortunately his header went across the face of the goal and not in the net.

Barrow got their just rewards on 25 minutes when captain Greg Challender put them in front.

The home side then had their own 'keeper Paul Horridge to thank when he pulled off a great save after Simon Parke found himself free in the box.

He hit a great drive but Horridge just managed to get a hand to it to prevent the goal.

Guiseley pumped up the pressure in the second-half and they asserted their authority as a weary Barrow started to fade.

Their equaliser came on 66 minutes and it was another fierce drive from Parke on the edge of the box which got them level.

In the last five minutes Barrow rallied and an overhead effort from Finney was tipped over the bar by Jim Shutt.
