Rugby-playing, fell-running engineer turned full-time student, Steve Miles enjoyed his biggest pay-day in sport -- for 10 seconds work.

Miles, 37 and a member of Keighley and Craven AC, showed a clean pair of heels in winning the 100 yards handicap at Kilnsey Show.

Under the famous Crag he clocked an unofficial winning time of 9.92 seconds for the handicap event. That was after winning his heat and taking part in the famous Crag fell race.

"I had to pull all the stops out," he said. "I was feeling it in the last few yards when my legs felt a bit wobbly. But I just pushed on and didn't look back."

Miles almost secured the scalp of international runner Mick Hawkins in Littondale on Sunday. He virtually pulled alongside the Bingley harrier in the 100 yards open at Halton Gill.

"Given another two yards I would have beaten him," he said.

The sprint specialist who plays his rugby at Morley, is Scotland-bound this weekend. Tomorrow he contests the hill race at Braemar, the highland games watched by the Queen and royal family, and on Sunday he defends his 200 metres title at the Blairgowrie games.

n Ian Holmes held off Bingley colleague Steve Hawkins to take the crag race title at Kilnsey. Darren Brame, making his debut at the venue, was best-placed K&C runner in sixth.
