A young mother dropped her three children from the bedroom window of her blazing home in a dramatic rescue.

The woman was taken to hospital with a broken wrist and back injuries after helping to save her three young children from their home.

Joanne Lyndley, 24, lowered the youngsters Reece, seven, Aiden, five, and Shante, three, into the arms of their father, Edward's, arms.

Mrs Lyndley was taken to hospital with a broken wrist and back injuries after she jumped from the window.

The incident happened shortly before midnight on Saturday, at the family home in Kingsley Avenue, Bolton Road, Bolton, Bradford.

Firefighters were called to the house after a neighbour heard Mrs Lyndley's husband Edward, 28, shouting for help after the house had become engulfed in smoke.

The fire, believed to have started at an overloaded plug extension in the kitchen, badly damaged the room including a refrigerator where a cake was being stored for Aiden's fifth birthday yesterday.

Mr Lyndley was first to jump from the bedroom window and then caught his children as his wife dropped them to him. Mrs Lindley then managed to flee the fire but hurt herself when she fell.

Once the children were safe, Mr Lyndley went back to rescue his two dogs trapped inside the house.

Leading firefighter Simeon Sharp, of Idle fire station, praised the couple's actions in getting the children out of the house.

He said: "There was thick black smoke pouring out of every window when we arrived. The kitchen was extremely badly damaged and the rest of the house was extensively smoke damaged.

"There was a smoke alarm fitted but there no battery in it - if it had a battery they would've got out safely."

Next door neighbour Sharon Gill, said: "We knew something was wrong when we heard Eddie shouting to get the kids out.

"The smoke was really thick - it was terrible. The house is totally gutted. Everybody came out to help and Eddie did really well getting the kids."

Another neighbour, Sue Metcalfe, called the fire brigade and looked after the three children while their mother was being treated.

The three children were all taken to Bradford Royal Infirmary suffering from shock and smoke inhalation. Mrs Lyndley was today being treated for a broken wrist, back injuries and shock.
