They were dressed for dancing but health workers in Charleston outfits were among nearly 100 people who took part in a fun run in Bradford yesterday to raise money for cancer patients.

The three-mile fun run looks to have raised £3,000 towards a £5.2 million Marie Curie Cancer centre for the city.

It was part of this year's Bradford 10K race organised by Bingley Harriers and Athletics Club, sponsored by Bradford & Bingley and supported by the Telegraph & Argus and others.

The group in Charleston fancy dress were nurses, midwives and receptionists from The Ridge Medical Practice at Great Horton who raised £600.

They ran with one of their practice GPs, Dr Hugh Tooby, who was dressed as a doctor complete with stethoscope. Bradford & Bingley community affairs manager Mike Hammond pledged to give £2.50 for every runner who finished in front of him - then walked round to help boost funds as much as possible.

"There were only three people who finished behind me," he said. In the end Bradford & Bingley upped their donation to £500.

Brian Curran, Bradford appeal fund-raiser for Marie Curie Cancer Care, said: "It's gone absolutely brilliantly with almost 100 people taking part. There was a great atmosphere with people really committed to helping the appeal."

Winners of the fun run were James Raper, Nick Wood and Sean Mitchell.

The £5.2 million Marie Curie Centre will be built in Leeds Road, Bradford, and have space for 16 patients.
