Angling: Team Fishomania used their local knowledge to good effect, gaining promotion via second place in the Division Four National on the Rochdale Canal.

Wheatsheaf - another York-shire side - took third, while Chris Hargreaves (Otley MG) completed a good day for the Tykes with third place in the individual competition. His bronze medal haul scaled 5k 980g.

The Huddersfield Broad Canal proved again what a fair venue it is, with roach showing throughout the 65-entry Alli-ance Open, and over 4lb needed to win every section.

Steve Parker (KL Tackle) triumphed from a peg on the Long Length. Offering 11 metre pole and caster at the bottom of the far ledge, he had a bonus 3lb bream, plus roach and perch for his 8-3-0.

Nigel Hirst (Hirst Tackle) continued his red-hot form with second from the LB Holidays section. Fishing pole and big maggot, he netted 42 roach and a dozen perch for his 7-5-0.

Others: Alan Smith (Fishermens Way) 6-2-0; Mark Webb (Trevs of Wilmslow) 5-9-0; Colin Hardy (Dick Clegg Bradford) 5-6-0.

A low, clear Swale at Maundby proved a tough nut to crack for the 41 who fished Bradford No 1's Hirst Cup. Keith Scott (West Park) enjoyed an easy victory from a peg in the Cattle Grid Plantation.

Alternating bomb and stick float with caster, he fished tight to the near bank cover taking eight chub for 23-1-0. Mick Mac-Donald (West Park) also had chub, taking six on bunches of casters under a loafer for his 13-7-0.

Others: Ian Graham (Bradford No 1) 13-2-0; John Hanson (Boston Spa) 8-4-0; Andy Fox (Bradford No 1) 5-0-0; Colin Gallagher (Bradford No 1) 4-8-0.

The final Leeds open of the summer on the Wharfe - the Victory Cup at Tadcaster and Ulleskelf - drew an entry of 62.

Derek Emsley (Yeadon) was biteless until the last hour when a late flurry saw him net seven barbel on stick and caster for his winning 28-11-0. Ian Lumb (Armley) took second with six bream on bomb and caster from a peg in Fieldings.

Others: Kevin Moore (Marsh Tackle) 20-10-0; Geoff Wilmore (Armley Angling) 17-12-0; Martin Thorpe (Armley Angling) 15-1-0; Stuart Holt (DAM Brighouse) 14-8-0.

'End Peg Chog' John Cyrow-ski (Armley Angling) took a dour 40-entry Leeds Summer League on the Ouse at Hunters Lodge with 8-4-0 of skimmers to groundbait feeder from another end peg, this time below the Bungalows at Hunters. Runner-up Steve Bolton (Armley Ang-ling) also had skimmers for his 5-5-0.

Others: Bob Cramner (Armley Angling) 3-1-0; Marjorie Harrison (Glen) 2-14-0.

Anglers practicing for next month's opening round of the Heavy Woollen Winter League will not have learnt much after a grim 33-pegger on the Huttons Ambo stretch of the Derwent. Steve Webley (GTI Wakefield) needed just 3-8-8 of gudgeon and roach taken on whip and maggot over joker from peg eight.
