Bradford firm Wedge has completed a major order for galvanised steel parts which are being used in a temporary platform as Leeds City Station is refurbished.
The deal, worth thousands of pounds, has involved the Canal Road company in galvanising more than 35 tonnes of steel which will form the main framework, supports, fencing and other parts of the Leeds Whitehall platform which was built near the station. The platform was being used for the first time this weekend.
The work was carried out for Washburn Fabrications, of Pool-in-Wharfedale, which makes equipment for Leeds firm Raildeck Systems which designed the structure and built it for Railtrack.
The contract involved processing hundreds of different pieces which were bolted together when the platform was constructed.
Wedge is believed to be the only firm in the country which can carry out the galvanising process used in the production of the parts.
The new platform was built on a freight line just to the left of Leeds main station. It is being used initially for passengers of night trains diverted during hours when the main station is closed while work on the £165 million refurbishment at Leeds City Station is being carried out.
