Skipper Stuart McCall has hailed the fighting spirit which helped Bradford City end their seven-week wait for a Premiership victory with a one-goal triumph at Derby.

The Bantams moved out of the bottom three thanks to a 67th minute own goal from Horacio Carbonari and another superb defensive display.

Goalkeeper Gary Walsh made five wonderful saves in the second half but it was the all-round team effort which pleased McCall the most.

He said: "It is a vital win. We are not the most entertaining of teams at the moment but we have conceded just four goals in five away games now.

"That has to be one of the best in the Premiership and is testament to how hard we are working for each other. Our problems are at the other end where we aren't creating chances. But we know we can improve our quality and that is what we will be working on.

The victory moved City above Derby although County defender Spencer Prior was less than complimentary about Paul Jewell's side.

He said: "In all the years I have played in the Premier League, they are the worst team I have faced. But they have come here and won. I hope this hurts the other lads as much as it hurts me."

Manager Paul Jewell said: "We defended magnificently and although we didn't create many chances, we came here in a positive frame of mind. I could not ask for any more from my players."

Asked about the dismissals of City's Andy Myers and Derby's Esteban Fuertes, Jewell said: "Andy Myers is disappointed but I have no complaints. I was making the substitution with Wayne Jacobs coming on when Fuertes was sent off. I didn't see the incident."
