The original Mary and Joseph made their journey to Bethlehem riding on a donkey but the characters in Menston Methodists nativity procession had a horse and trap.

Diane and Ashley France, of Brooklands, Menston, playing Mary and Joseph, were drawn through the village yesterday with baby Jesus, played by their own one-month-old son, Adam. Shepherds, wise men and innkeepers joined the procession, taking the nativity story to the streets.

The Menston Millennium Street Nativity was arranged by the members of the Methodist Junior church.

Pat Reid, junior church superintendent said: "It's a celebration and we thought it would be nice to go out into the village. It is one way of meeting people."

Older people had the chance to join the procession for part of the journey or simply watch as it passed through their area.

Villagers were also invited to sing carols and meet up for coffee and mince pies served at the church after the procession.
