Pop group Black Lace have been given the unlikely honour of helping TV bosses see in the new Millennium.

The West Yorkshire band, who are managed by Scholes-based management company NOW Music, are among the performers invited to take part in Channel 5's once-in-a-lifetime New Year celebrations.

Britain's newest terrestrial channel will see in the New Year with a Millennium Special edition of its programme Night Fever.

Black Lace's manager John Wagstaff said: "It's a real honour for the group to be invited to be on the show. When you're having a party, Black Lace really are the ultimate party band, whether you love them or hate them and this is certainly going to be one of the biggest parties ever."

There will be three Night Fever programmes during the evening of December 31 concentrating on music from different decades before the Millennium Party show kicks off just after midnight.

Producer Dave Morley said: "We chose Black Lace because they are the best knees-up band in the world and you can't beat a bit of Agadoo."

The show will be hosted by Madness frontman Suggs and other guests will include Village People, Leo Sayer and Abba tribute band Fabba.

Black Lace, whose current line-up features Colin Gibb and Rob Hopcraft, will perform their biggest hit Agadoo.

The song, originally released in 1984, was voted the second most irritating song of all time in an HMV poll last year.

Agadoo was also used in a humorous Peugeot advert in 1998 which featured cannibals running away screaming when the song started playing on a car radio. It was also used in a Government advertising campaign: "It just goes to show you can recycle any old rubbish."
