Haworth is the venue for the last fell race of the century tomorrow - the Auld Lang Syne event over six miles from Penistone Hill Country park (11.30am).

Bingley harrier Ian Holmes, who holds the course record at 34 minutes, is the favourite in an anticipated field of 500.

Runners are expected from all over the country, and all finishers will receive a chocolate treat, as well as a pint of specially brewed millennium beer.

Former world fell racing champion carol Greenwood (Bingley harriers) will be assisting her husband Allan in promoting a four-mile run on Saturday.

The New Year's Day venue is the picturesque setting of Ogden Reservoir, near Denholme (noon).

This fun event will start on the reservoir embankment before climbing a woodland trail to The Giant's Tooth - a standing stone on Ovenden Moor - then returning to complete a lap around the reservoir.

Entries will be taken on the day, and commemorative certificates awarded to all.

Bradford Airedale veteran Steve Oldfield and his wife Pauline were both winners in the Coley Canter multi-terrain race from Shelf Hall Park.

Steve, a 42-year-old warehouse storeman from Great Horton, smashed the previous best set 12 months ago by Abbey Runners' Joe Gonzales, with 43min 41sec.

Oldfield led in a field of over 60 on a mainly woodlands and bridleways course around Coley and Norwood Green.

He finished well over a minute ahead of Keighley and Craven's Jonnie Butler and Airedale clubmate Richard Crossland.

Keighley-based Dave Woodhead showed a return to form after a back injury to finish fourth ahead of Queensbury's Peter Hughes.

Shelf's Steve Sanderson pipped fellow Airedaler Dave Rhodes for the over-50s prize.

Pauline Oldfield beat Ann Lloyd (St Bede's) by 26 seconds to win the women's race in 55-42. Distance specialist Sylvia Watson of Leeds-based Valley Striders was the first over-50, while Queensbury's Linda Green (Bradford Airedale) was the leading over-45.
