A BURLEY-in-Wharfedale couple have endured a miserable start to the New Year after their business was

ram-raided.

In the early hours of Sunday morning, a car was driven through the front window of Walk Wright in Main Street.

A quantity of fleeces were stolen from the shop, which stocks outdoor equipment. Proprietors Chris Wright and Sylvia Robertshaw were left with a big cleaning up job but they are determined to carry on as best they can.

Mrs Robertshaw said she could not think of the words to describe those responsible. "It is very very sad," she said.

Mr Wright said it was the second such ram raid the shop had suffered in less than three years.

He said security measures were in place, the most expensive stock was removed from the shop each night, but the thieves had clearly been determined.

Mrs Robertshaw said: "People just can't believe it. Some people have even inquired whether we were in the middle of having the decorators in."

She was astonished how anyone taking part in the raid had survived, as the car had ploughed through a planter in front of the shop and then into the window grill.

Police said two people had been released on police bail while further inquiries into the incident were carried out.
