Bradford's Baton Twirling Troupe is appealing for a permanent training base to secure its high ambitions in European and world championships.

The 20 twirlers practice in the hall at South Royd first school, Littlemoor Crescent, Pudsey, every week.

But at weekends and during the school holidays, the troupe has to find another hall.

The twirlers are also seeking sponsorship from Bradford businesses.

Troupe leader Sheila Low said they can use various sports halls but this can be expensive and cost about £30.

"There's the fee for the hall then so much per girl. And we have to book it every week in advance," she said.

"The girls come from across the Bradford area and it would be better if we could have a permanent base where we could train every week."

To train the troupe needs a high hall with a suitable floor, preferably wooden.

The troupe, which has been going about 20 years, intends to enter the national baton twirling championships in Portsmouth in May. Teams are also going forward for selection to compete at European level in Germany in April.

Last week the girls claimed top rankings in competitions in Preston.

Gemma Petty, 14, of Little Cote, Thackley, Bradford, will be competing in the world championships in Holland this August.

"Now is a vital time to ensure the girls can get their training in. They work so hard and deserve to do well," added Mrs Low.

And twirler Kirsty Gaunt, 12, of Tong Street, said: "I find it very upsetting that nobody will help us with our sport but will help other sports."
