A man has died after being rushed to hospital from a police cell.

The 54-year-old local man, who has not been named, was arrested last night by police at Toller Lane after being found by officers apparently drunk in the road.

He was taken to Toller Lane Police station, where officers later became worried about mystery injuries.

The man was admitted to Leeds General Infirmary, where he later died.

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said officers arrested the man at the junction of Bingley Road and Haworth Road at 7.45pm last night following a report from a member of the public.

He said: "A call was received by the ambulance centre from a member of the public saying a road traffic accident had occurred. Officers are still looking into that claim."

Police initially said the man may have suffered a head injury but now say that is speculation.

"We are trying to establish what his injuries were, how he sustained them and where he sustained them," said the spokesman.

"The man's family have been made aware of his death and the coroner has been informed."

The spokesman added a post-mortem examination was due to be carried out later today to determine the nature and extent of his injuries.

West Yorkshire Ambulance Service today confirmed crews were called to the scene at 7.45pm after reports of a possible road traffic accident.

When paramedics arrived they found a man in the road near to the Fina Petrol Station, Toller Lane - near to the junction of Bingley Road and Haworth Road.

Police cordoned off a section of road and footpath on Bingley Road.

A spokesman for the Police Complaints Authority said today if the man died while in custody the incident would be investigated.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact police at Toller Lane on Bradford 376255.
