A review of local transport plans by local authorities has sparked action by horse riders in Wharfedale.

And access to Ilkley Moor and other areas is a major part of their campaign.

Ilkley riders Debbie Redman and Cathy Suzuki - on behalf of the British Horse Society - are sending a questionnaire to local livery yards and hope to use the information fed back to force the hand of Bradford Council.

Cathy said: "Now that local authorities are reviewing local transport plans and the use of the moors for leisure activities I think it is a good time to make our voices heard about the needs of equestrians in our district.

"Ramblers have got their 'Rights to Roam'. Cyclists can use bridleways but do we as riders feel that enough provision is made for our needs and safety?

"I have been in touch with the Countryside Officer, Daniel Jackson, who has said that he would like to hear our views."

The questionnaire asks how often people ride, when they hack, how often do they go on Ilkley Moor, what they feel about the conditions of Ilkley Moor and what would improve conditions for the rider.

Debbie said: "We are particularly concerned that Bradford Council has allowed so much residential building work thereby increasing the number of cars on the roads.

"However, they have not improved the riding areas available on Ilkley Moor where horses and riders may go safely. Our aim is to point out to the council the dangers of the roads and the number of children who ride in our area.

"Eventually we hope to persuade the council to erect horse and rider triangle signs on the approach to the moor and to upgrade the well used paths not just for cyclists and walkers but also for horse riders."
