PARENTS are to be banned from parking directly outside Sutton's primary schools in an effort ensure the safety of pupils.

New traffic orders are to be introduced which stop vehicles parking on both sides of the road outside Sutton County Primary and the Church of England School.

In addition, highways experts at North Yorkshire County Council are to draw up a safe route to school for parents and their children.

Philip Sant, headteacher of Sutton County Primary School, told the Herald: "The Friends of the School group, governors and myself have always been concerned about parking outside the school.

"Children have to cross the road in between parked cars and introducing the new measures would ensure that traffic could see that there's a school there and therefore it should be safer."

The new measures will include extending the zig-zag lines outside both schools and putting yellow lines on the opposite side of the road for the length of the school buildings.

The possibility of building a traffic island at the junction of Holme Lane, High Street and Main Street will also be looked at.

And new rules are to be brought in to allow the police to ticket any vehicle caught parking on the zig-zag lines.

"We're certain most parents will respond positively to these measures," added Mr Sant.

Residents will be given the opportunity to comment on the schemes before they are introduced.
