Ilkley Ladies draw

ON May 8 it was the turn of the Ilkley Ladies' Scratch Team to play their first match. With the sun shining in Ilkley shorts seemed to be the order of the day but disappointingly a cold murky sky greeted the golfers at Pannal and players soon resorted to warmer clothing.

The beautiful condition of the course and the spectacular colours more than made up for the weather. The match was very closely contested with the final result being a draw 31/2 points each and the winners for Ilkley were Marylyn Brand, Linda Burrows and Liz Downs, with Sally Ognall halving her match.

On the same day not very far away the B team were blessed with a sunny day at Bradford Golf Club. Points were very elusive and only Maggie Mitchell and Wendy Pillinger won giving the home team a 5 to 2 victory. Perhaps we are not used to the sunshine after such a particularly wet spring!

Ann Newman has been very busy on the golf courses, playing and winning in her first match for Yorkshire Seconds against Rotherham Scratch Team.

Then teaming up with Judy Sherwin for the first round of the Millennium Foursomes at Horsforth and winning by the comfortable margin of 6 and 4.

HOLE-IN-ONE

Congratulations are also due to the Lady Captain, Marjorie Bradley who had a hole-in-one at the 9th on the Spanish course Torrequebrada, thus ensuring that none of us were around to help her celebrate.

The A team played at South Leeds Golf Club, a course quite different from Ilkley with several raised greens.

Despite the cold and windy conditions the team were in fine form winning 41/2 to 21/2 Sally Ognall, Sue Wood, Liz Webster, and Daphne Hawkins all winning and the B Team Captain, Ann Gillon ,who was brought in at the last minute gained a valuable half.

The first prize day of the year, held on May 9 was a yellow ball competition kindly given by Pam Blackburn, Queenie Fraser and Margaret Pack.

Blue skies, warm sunshine and the cherry trees in full blossom, a perfect golfing day. The winners, with a score of 153, were Claire Barker, Di Spratt, and Maggie Mitchell, second on 155 were Sue Hatfield, Angela Hatfield, Angela Jackson and Audrey Lister, and in third place with 157 were Liz Downs, Sue Bairstow, and Julie Ormondroyd.
