There were blue skies over Haworth as the village turned back the clock for its annual weekend of wartime nostalgia.

People from near and far thronged the bunting-lined streets for the village's sixth Forties Weekend, organised by Haworth Traders.

And there were plenty of people in the mood for a good time as they dressed up in wartime uniforms and fashions from a bygone era.

Ensuring things got off to a spectacular start on Saturday afternoon was the Battle of Britain memorial flight.

A Spitfire and Hurricane flanked the last remaining Lancaster Bomber in service for the formation flight over Main Street

Attractions over the weekend of nostalgia included a procession of civilian and military vintage vehicles along Main Street, a jazz band and street entertainers.

Those of a calm and steady disposition also tried their hand at defusing an unexploded bomb. Ukulele player Paul Harper rekindled the songs of George Formby and Winston Churchill look-a-like Robert Burns enjoyed tea at The Stirrup.

Keen jivers packed out the popular Saturday night dance with swinging band Nyte Beat providing the sounds.

"The whole thing was amazing," says Haworth Traders' committee member Ann Smith. "The weather was fabulous, the atmosphere was fabulous and we couldn't have got more people in Haworth if we'd tried. "It was just like the good old days and I think a lot of people appreciated the fact that most of the attractions were laid on for free.

"The flyover was particularly emotional for a lot of people and it was something very special to see.

"A lot of people thanked us for such a good day and there are already lots who have booked up for next year."

The nostalgic celebrations were first held by Haworth Traders to coincide with the 50th anniversary of VE Day.

Since then, the weekend has gained a national reputation as one of the biggest and best of its kind, with people travelling from all over the UK to take part.
