Villagers to march against tip plans

Villagers have vowed to carry on their fight against a landfill tip opening near their homes.

More than 100 villagers attended a meeting organised by the Denholme Residents Action Group (DRAG) held at the village's Mechanics Institute last night.

At the meeting the results of a report carried out by planning experts from Staffordshire University, hired by DRAG, were revealed.

The report has raised concerns over the effects a landfill tip would have on the water table in the area.

It also states the walls of Buck Park Quarry, where Hull-based company Wastewise hopes to open the tip, are unstable and would not be able to support any lining designed to hold toxic materials.

DRAG member Sharon Makinson, said: "It was a very positive meeting.

"This has gone on for such a long time now that apathy can set in. But it was a good turnout and the atmosphere in the village has lifted a few notches."

Plans for a protest march against the tip were also announced at the meeting.

DRAG is appealing for as many villagers as possible to join the mile-long march on Saturday which will start at 1.30pm outside the Mechanics Institute.

The group will also be holding a fundraising evening at the Royal Hotel on Friday from 5pm to raise money to keep the anti-tip protest going.
