The current double-winning Northcliffe team is even better than the one which dominated Bradford golf in the late 1980s and early 90s.

And that verdict comes from someone who should know - club stalwart Martin Bell, who was in the teams which won the Scratch League six times in ten years from 1987 to 1996 and also took the team title four times in that period.

Martin won the T&A golfer of the year title for a record seven years in a row and was top amateur in the Bradford Open in 1989, as was Peter Daffern in 1987. The Bradford amateur matchplay title was won by Martin three times, Richard Chappel once and Mark Cook once in a five-year spell of Northcliffe dominance.

But after Northcliffe added the team title to their Division One triumph, Martin confessed: "We had a good team then, but I think this one is even better. And it's also going to get better, so we will be among the trophies for a few years to come.

"There are some very good youngsters at this club, among them my son Simon and Andrew Town, who will make sure we are at the top for a while yet.

"They always give everything in every competition, no matter what it is. There is such a great team spirit at the club.

"Our only worry is that Simon will probably not be available as much next year as he gets involved in more and more national competitions. I think Andrew will also want to play in more big events.

"But there is plenty of strength in depth, and I don't think losing them on occasions will make too much difference."

James Firth and Gareth Evans, who shot the lowest round of the day at West Bradford with 64, completed the winning team line-up, while Cook also made a useful contribution to the Scratch League.

Simon Bell made his Yorkshire debut at the weekend in their draw with Derbyshire, but had to pull out of the afternoon singles because of a back injury.
