THIS British Midland jet, with 34 passengers aboard, is pictured shortly before landing at Leeds Bradford Airport in a full-scale emergency alert.

The aircraft, on a flight from jersey to the Yeadon airport, had developed problems with its front wheel immediately after take-off fromJersey.

The crew were worried about the state of the front wheel and the aircraft did a fly-past of the control tower at Yeadon with its undercarriage down. Controllers could not see a problem and the plane landed safely, chased by airport fire appliances.

In a separate incident at Leeds Bradford Airport, an airliner had to abandon its landing after being warned that another aircraft was blocking the runway.

An eyewitness said the Gulfstream aircraft had to abort its landing approach and gain height because a delayed Ryanair airliner was waiting on the runway to take off.

Although airport bosses say the incident was an 'absolutely normal procedure', an enthusiast listening to an air band radio said the landing airliner was within sight of the airfield when the warning came.

But airport director of operations Rob Lund said the matter was not under investigation. He said: "It happens from time to time. It was on the approach, and we contacted them and warned them an aeroplane which should have gone was on the runway. I was actually in Leeds at the time, and wondered why the aircraft was circling."

Mr Lund said the airliner circled until the other aircraft had taken off, then came in to land safely.
