Councillor Smith Midgley started his new role as chairman of the Bradford Development Control Panel with good news - progress in cutting down the backlog of planning applications. A pile-up of planning work started even before the reorganised councils took office, because of the run down of staff in the old authorities. The Bradford council started with a backlog of more than 700 applications.

Free telegrams to any part of the Empire are being offered to Bradford people at the Post Office exhibition which opened in St. George's Hall today for a fortnight. A special dispatch office has been set up in the hall where people can not only lodge their messages but see them transmitted. In addition, a miniature automatic telephone exchange can be seen in full operation, letters are franked and sorted, and a coast to ship radio service operates.
