The Heckmondwike school where car crash victim Angela Ovington taught is to close for a day so the entire staff can attend her funeral in County Durham.

And on their return to Cawley Lane Junior, Infant and Nursery School, a special book of memories is to be created by pupils and staff.

Miss Ovington, 28, died when a car crashed into her following a night out in Huddersfield. She and best friend Susan Briggs were struck by a white BMW 5-Series as they walked in Willow Lane.

Richard Ovenden, headmaster at the school, said although she had only been there for a year, she had touched the lives and hearts of everyone.

"Such is the strength of feeling that the whole staff will attend the funeral on Wednesday and the school will close for the day," said Mr Ovenden. He added that a letter was being sent out to parents today informing them of the closure.

Parents and children arriving at the school this morning were being greeted by staff who were explaining the tragedy and answering any questions. Mr Ovenden was also meeting the older children due to have been taught by Miss Ovington, and an assembly was being held in her memory.

A book of memories, including photographs, thoughts, stories and letters will be put together and sent to Miss Ovington's parents in County Durham.

Mr Ovenden added: "Angela got on well with mischievous children so we are now thinking along the lines of introducing an award in her name once a term to a child who, despite difficulties, is working hard and achieving results."

He added: "The staff are devastated," said Mr Ovenden, who called a staff meeting on Friday to discuss how they could help one another through the trauma.

"Angela wasn't just an ordinary teacher, she was rapidly developing into an exceptional teacher, one who cared for all the children that she taught.

"You'd only need to see her move around the school, chatting to children, staff and parents to know that she loved her job and in return she had the love and affection of the children."

He said once the funeral had been held and things had settled down, they would look to holding a special assembly for parents of children she taught and consider planting a tree in her memory in the school garden.

Police are trying to trace a group of men who tried to help the two women at the scene of the crash. Anyone with information is asked to call (01484) 436647/436658.
