Queensbury - under the guidance of new coach Basil Richards, the Doncaster Dragons and ex Huddersfield Giants forward - got off to a great start in the Premier Division with a 34-12 win over rivals Clayton at the Delph.

Clayton looked to be in the driving seat when they led 16-12 at the break with two tries from Richard Wood and one from Anthony Brannan.

Stand-off and captain Darren Collins landed two conversions.

Queensbury grabbed tries from Lee Charlton, Jason Pell and Trevor Stead but failed to add any extras.

Clayton's notorious reputation for poor starts to the season again caught up with them in the second half as sparkling three-quarter play from Queensbury took its toll.

Steven Senior and Andrew Barraclough crowned fine displays with two tries each and Lee Baron, Carl Smith and Johnny Feather scored a goal each.

Promoted Birkenshaw marked their return to the top flight by winning a thriller 18-16 at home to Ovenden.

Birkenshaw found themselves 8-0 down in the early stages but fought their way back with a Jarrod Toulson penalty followed by a super try from veteran second row forward Andy Redmond who raced half the length of the field and side-stepped the full-back to cross under the posts.

The conversion attempt failed but Toulson made amends with a drop goal to make the half-time score 12-7.

Birkenshaw's defence was superb on the restart, which provided the platform for them to counter attack with a try by full-back Morton Robinson.

Toulson added the conversion plus a penalty and drop goal before Ovenden clawed their way back to level at 16-16.

But with just five minutes left the visitors were penalised for ball stealing and Toulson slotted over the winner from the touchline.

In Division Two Wyke looked on the way to a major upset when they raced into a 10-0 lead against last season's unbeaten Division Three Champions West Bowling A.

But Bowling managed a score just before the interval to turn around 10-4 behind, and scrum-half Dean Garside took the game by the scruff of the neck to score five goals and a hat-trick as Bowling ran out 34-10 winners. Shah Basha scored two tries and Lee Hobson one.

Queensbury A made it a double for the club by winning their Division Three encounter 22-12 at Morley Borough.

Three tries from veteran Andy Thornton and five goals from Steven Gallagher completed Queensbury's scoring.
