Adventurer Ian Haythornthwaite is to follow in the ancient Incas' footsteps during a South American expedition to the "roof of the world".

The 29-year-old auditor from Harden will trek through the Andes to Machu Picchu - the Incas' Lost City.

The ten-day trip is set to raise at least £2,500 for the Children's Society. Ian will travel with some 50 other walkers, including GMTV presenter Penny Smith.

Ian said: "You need to be pretty fit because of the terrain and altitude but I regularly go camping and walking in the Lake District, ran the London Marathon last year, and have been clocking up the miles on my mountain bike to get ready.

"We're going up so high altitude sickness can be a big problem but we'll be spending a couple of days acclimatising. It'll be very hot during the day but at night, when we'll be camping out, it can dip below freezing."
