VANDAL attacks at a public toilet in Ilkley could force the closure of the whole block, cleansing bosses have warned.

A carefully planned campaign of destruction - including underwater setting cement being poured into toilet bowls - has been carried out at Riverside Gardens.

Keith Hammerton, graffiti removal manager at Bradford City Council, said he was not looking at the usual suspects.

He said: "Young people are often blamed whenever there is vandalism. But this is not the normal kind of vandalism."

Mr Hammerton said he believed somebody harbouring a grudge against Ilkley Parish Council could be the culprit.

But at a meeting this week, parish councillors expressed concern that the determined vandal attacks could be aimed at homosexuals meeting in the toilets for casual sex.

"It could be against them," said Parish Clerk Miggy Bailey. If the damage resulted in closure, the homosexuals would disappear from the area.

Mr Hammerton said: "These toilets seem to have been targeted by some individual. It appears they have some sort of vendetta against Ilkley Parish Council or get some sort of perverse pleasure out of causing the damage."

The vandalism began with the repeated destruction of porcelain toilets. Bradford Council took the step of installing two costly stainless steel toilets in a bid to stamp out the damage.

Mr Hammerton said: "For six months everything was fine. Then someone filled one with cement. That particular cubicle has now been closed for some time. It is impossible to get the cement out.

"In the last week or so, another one has been filled with cement. Pipes have also been cut and left on the toilet floor."

Mr Hammerton said the damage appeared so precise and pre-meditated it could be the work of one person.
