Bradford surgeon Robert Phipps is set to appeal to hospital bosses against their decision to sack him.

Managers at Bradford Hospitals NHS Trust have received a letter from Mr Phipps, formerly a breast surgeon at the trust, saying he intends to appeal.

He has now been asked to give details of the grounds of his appeal, said a trust spokesman.

Earlier this week, the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh, of which Mr Phipps is a fellow, met to consider whether to recommend withdrawal of his accreditation, which would bar him from working as a consultant in this country.

A college spokesman said then: "Members of the council are minded that Mr Phipps's accreditation should be withdrawn and a full report will be forwarded to the General Medical Council."

The GMC is responsible for registering doctors and will have to decide what, if any, action to take.

Mr Phipps was sacked two weeks ago after "discrepancies" over employment issues.

Although 28 of more than 3,000 of his former patients were invited to have an independent medical examination, the trust stressed the sacking was not to do with medical negligence or sub-standard clinical practice.
