A teenager has been ordered to stay away from a Bradford vicar after he was convicted of threatening to kill him and harassment.

Christopher Coombes, 19, has been ordered by Bradford magistrates to stay away from Queensbury Parish Church and its vicar, the Reverend Peter Hedge, while he awaits sentence on the charges.

Coombes, of Rawson Avenue, Bradford Moor, has also been told he cannot contact his former manager at double-glazing firm Safestyle UK and a woman colleague he had a relationship with after he was also convicted of additional harassment charges.

Magistrates were told yesterday how Coombes pestered Reverend Hedge with visits and phone calls before the vicar reported the situation to the police.

Prosecutor Lynne Kershaw said the vicar had known Coombes from a youth centre in the Thornbury area. She told the Court: ''He started to get numerous visits and telephone calls from the defendant asking if he could stay at his home or perhaps lend him some money."

After visits and requests increased, Mrs Kershaw said the vicar decided to tape Coombes' calls in August, and during one conversation he became more desperate. ''He said he was going to get a gun and shoot the Reverend,'' she said. ''He told the vicar he was going to come up that night and burn the Reverend's house down while he was in it.''

Reverend Hedge reported the incident and Coombes was arrested.

After he was bailed, less than a fortnight later he made phone calls to his former employers in an effort to contact his ex-girlfriend, although Coombes was subject to a six-month restraining order after harassing the work colleague. During one call, Coombes threatened to shoot manager Robert Leary.

Last month, Coombes pleaded guilty to two offences of harassment, threatening to kill Reverend Hedge and threatening behaviour, but the magistrates decided their powers were not sufficient. He was granted conditional bail and will have to attend at Bradford Crown Court on a date yet to be fixed.

Stuart Carter, for Coombes, said his client had been infatuated with his ex-colleague and did not want their relationship to end. He added Coombes had spent time at Lynfield Mount Hospital after suffering a breakdown and was on medication due to depression.
