A Bradford girls' school has changed its name because staff and pupils are tired at being mixed up with a rival school across the city.

The school, formerly Bradford Girls' Grammar School, has now been re-dubbed The Girls' Grammar School, Bradford.

Head teacher Lynda Warrington said the sole reason for the change was because of confusion between her school on Squire Lane and Bradford Grammar School on Keighley Road.

"We have not really changed the name," she said. "It is just putting the emphasis in a slightly different place. It is because we are sometimes confused with another school in the city.

"It just becomes annoying that girls from our netball squads and hockey teams do well but their successes are attributed to the school down the road."

She said the new name had actually been used before. The school was known as Bradford Girls Grammar School when it was founded in 1875 and had been for the last ten years.

But in the intervening period the title had changed to The Girls Grammar School, Bradford at least once.

The current change is for an open-ended trial period and Mrs Warrington said if things did not work out then it could change back again.

"We are not making a big song and dance about it before we do anything dramatic," she said, adding the initials BGGS currently used on various parts of the uniform would gradually be phased out. Replacing stationary would be a great extra expense as stocks were regularly replaced.

But changing the school sign will be more difficult as it is carved in stone.

Head teacher at Bradford Grammar School, Stephen Davidson, said: "We wish them every success with their new initiative. I am not adverse to change myself.

"There have been one or two good news stories about the girls grammar about which there has been some confusion. Maybe they have not had the plaudits they deserved as a school."

Bradford Grammar School, traditionally an all boys school, has accepted girls into its sixth from since 1984. But a stronger rivalry has existed between the schools since last year when Bradford Grammar School went fully co-educational.
