CRAVEN'S crime figures saw a slight increase in the first seven months of the year.

From April 1 to October 30, 1,576 incidents were reported, compared to a 1,548 over the same period last year.

"It is not good news, but we have got to remember we are dealing with relatively low numbers," Chief Supt Andy Parker told Craven's Community and Police Group.

The main increases were in Skipton and Cross Hills. In Skipton, violence, theft, and car crime all saw a rise, while in Cross Hills, the problem areas were house burglaries (up from 14 to 24), theft and damage. However, there was some good news - car crime in South Craven tumbled by about 50 per cent, from 102 offences to 56.

Over the same period, 72 people were stopped and searched for class A drugs, and nine warrants were issued for house searches. In total, heroin, ecstasy and cocaine worth more than £20,000 was seized.

On the roads, the number of accidents fell by 10 per cent, from 314 to 283, and nearly 600 speeding tickets were issued, along with 689 endorseable tickets and 940 non-endorseable tickets.
