GENEROUS readers are rallying around a stricken sports and social club in Otley.

Despite Christmas looming, almost £600 has been raised in the last two weeks to help Weston Lane Sports and Social Club, which was devastated in an arson attack three weeks ago.

The club lost thousands of pounds worth of sports equipment and had their clubhouse gutted by the fire.

It has now launched its Walk On Appeal, backed by the Wharfedale Observer, which aims to secure the future of the club - and the club committee is already looking at the

possibility of building a new clubhouse.

Chairman Chris Lawson said the £150 donated by Observer readers this week was very welcome.

"I'm very pleased at the response so far and we have a number of fundraising events with the kids planned for the New Year, which we hope will boost funds further," he said.

He said that the club had attempted to

contact former England and Leeds United skipper Jack Charlton for help in the appeal.

Jack used to visit the Otley club on a regular basis to take training and was the club's coach during the historic 1965-66 season - the year he won the World Cup with England at Wembley.

Current club chairman Chris Lawson said: "We have tried to get in contact with him, but he hasn't got back to us yet.

"He visited the club for a few years during the sixties, presenting trophies and so on. I remember having one on one coaching with him, which was amazing for a 10-year-old.

"I clearly remember him throwing the ball for me to head - it's something that I'll never forget.

"It was pretty awe-inspiring to have Jack coach us for midweek sessions."
