Unbeaten Bradford heavyweight Huggy Osman is quitting the ring.

The 28-year-old bows out with a record of five wins and a draw and he now has big plans to try to help project the sport's profile in his home city.

Osman is going to apply for a promoter's licence and also plans to manage a number of young boxers.

Osman had his last fight earlier this month when he outpointed Hartlepool's Brian Gascoigne.

The verdict was greeted with boos by the diners at Bradford Hilton Hotel.

But that had no influence on his decision to retire.

"When I was persuaded to have a go in the professional ranks I agreed to take just six fights and see what happened.

"That period is now up and I have told my trainer Chris Aston that I am not going to box again," he said.

"There are lots of things I want to do outside the ring and I am confident that I can make a success of them.

"I believe that people do not realise just what talent we have here in Bradford and I think that I can help to raise awareness of it."

Osman will apply to the Central Area Council of the British Boxing Board of Control for a Promoter's Licence in March.

He then hopes to stage his first show in May.

Osman is currently looking at potential venues and insists that he wants to promote open shows.

"I am not into dinner promotions. I believe we need shows to which the ordinary punter can afford to come along and see the young Bradford boxers in action.

"I would like to eventually hold about three a year and the bills would predominantly feature Bradford boxers," he said.

Osman has not revealed the names of the boxers he is looking to manage but he believes he has a few potential targets who are ready to take their chance in the pro ranks.

"There are good lads waiting to turn professional and I want to help give them their chance.

"I may not be boxing myself but I reckon I will get a lot of pleasure out of promoting and managing," he said.
