COMPANY director Thomas Stevenson is hoping to move a step closer to his lifelong ambition of driving a powerful racing car in competition.

Although he had not stepped into a racing car until a few months ago, Mr Stevenson could soon be driving around the world's most famous race circuits - and earn himself £75,000 at the same time.

The Horsforth 24-year-old was competing in the Michelen Clio Scholarship, masterminded by current GT driver Tim Sugden, which gives ordinary people the chance to be the racing drivers of tomorrow.

Mr Stevenson, who recently underwent a stringent medical and second race, is now one step away from a third race - the Pre-Final - along with 30 other entrants from across the country.

He said: "I think I've shown my potential and that I have much more than enthusiasm. I am confident about progressing about progressing and fulfilling my childhood ambition.

"I'll keep everything crossed until I hear whether I have made it through."

The overall winner will be chosen by a panel of judges from Michelin, Autosport and Motoring News. Mr Stevenson should hear in mid-January whether he has made the last 30.
