Silsden'S new swimming pool group could become a charity.

Swimstart, part of the town's parish council, was set up to run the pool after school governors at Hothfield Street School could not afford to keep it running.

The parish council is deciding what form Swimstart will eventually take once the pool is officially signed over by education bosses in Bradford.

Sheena Spence, from the advisory group the Yorkshire Local Councils' Association, suggested the group should become a charity.

She told Swimstart members that Bradford Council would have to lease the pool to the charity for 99 years.

The charity would then run the pool, leaving the parish council as the holding trustee.

The YLCA has agreed to advise on drawing up a charity constitution and scrutinise any lease.

The parish council has set a target of £10,000 needed to carry out major refurbishments to the pool before it can be reopened.

A swimming pool totaliser has now appeared in the window of Silsden Town Hall to show how much money has been raised.
