AN ILKLEY man says he is still suffering sleepless nights as a result of Tesco's round the clock opening hours.

Eric Baxter says he cannot remember the last time he had a good nights sleep.

The 71-year-old said despite measures introduced by Tesco to lower noise levels he is often kept awake until the wee hours.

Mr Baxter, a resident at Leconfield House, said: "I sleep 29 yards away from the entrance. The other night I did not get to sleep until two in the morning. It is like living on the M62."

Some shoppers had been shocked at Tesco's move to ban trolleys from the car-park between certain hours.

A security guard is carrying the load for customers and helping them to their cars, to prevent the sound of creaking trolleys.

But Mr Baxter said cars and delivery vans are still making a nocturnal racket and said he did not think the opening hours were necessary.

He said: "Who wants to shop at two o'clock in the morning? I worked long hours but I never shopped on Sundays or in the middle of the night. There is no need. It is just sloppy housekeeping."

Tesco's was unavailable for comment.
