Guiseley gave their supporters little to cheer about over Christmas although they did rescue a point at Harrogate Town on Boxing Day.

Neil Parsley's men look to be lacking in all areas with their midfield bereft of ideas, their defence failing in the basics and their front men unable to find the target.

There had been signs of better things to come with performances at Runcorn and Ashton but did they only flatter to deceive?

Judging by the two holiday performances one would think so.

A 1-0 defeat by Chorley at Nethermoor on Saturday was hard to swallow with chances going begging. David Cooke was the main perpetrator here when he seemingly had enough chances on a plate to have won the game.

All was lost however when Colin Hogarth, who has been out of the game for a couple of months, found the pace too hot for him. Despite enjoying the leniency of the referee with his first challenge on David Eatock he tried to catch up with his disappearing opponent and a clumsy challenge from behind brought a penalty.

David Mills slammed this home to take the points for his side.

Guiseley had shown plenty of promise in the early stages and after Nigel Muttick had collected a lofted shot by Graham Hicks it was the home side who produced the better football. Once again however there was no finish.

They went the closest when a 13th minute cross from David Cooke ran loose and was struck by Benn Gallagher but his effort was deflected for a corner.

The match brought the home debut of midfielder Dave Henry, a recent signing from Garforth Town. Guiseley produced some better efforts towards the close when substitute Phil Atkinson started to unlock the Chorley defence and Julian Wilkes was a willing front runner.

Back to the Harrogate game - a game which did not live up to pre-match billing. Two poor sides could only attract just over 300 to the Boxing Day derby albeit Town's highest crowd of the season for a league game.

The first-half did little to inspire either set of supporters and they certainly had few chances to keep warm by applauding.

It was 22 minutes before Guiseley produced a shot on target, David Cooke's right foot shot being deflected by 'keeper Paul Allen for a corner.

In the early stages former Guiseley full-back Peter Atkinson made some timely interventions for Town.

As Guiseley stepped up the pressure going into the break Simon Trevitt had a header just wide.

Early in the second-half Town took the lead when indecision and a lack of marking in the Guiseley defence saw Craig Elliott steer the ball past 'keeper Nigel Muttick.

On earlier happenings there looked no way that Guiseley would hit back but they defied their critics.

Again the action happened after Phil Atkinson came on as a substitute for David Donaldson. He burst down the left wing before crossing into the middle for Paul Burke to score with a low drive from 12 yards.

On a bitterly cold day this went some way to warming Guiseley hearts and they produced a rousing finish with Dave Henry having a header saved.

l On Saturday Guiseley travel to Lincoln United for a 3 pm kick-off. The Reserves are without a game. Their League Cup game at Altrincham on Wednesday was postponed due to a frozen pitch.
